Java IDE Survey - Who’s Using What, and Why?

March 1st, 2007 by Rob Harwood

TheServerSide.com is conducting a survey about which Java IDEs are being used and why. The questions appear to be quite well chosen, rather than just a simple check-box vote for your favourite. We’re looking forward to the results! If you would like to participate, see the survey here.

  1. Adrian Milliner Says:

It doesn’t really allow you to say why you might use more than one IDE. Sure, you can infer that someone might use Netbeans for Java EE 5 stuff because they deploy to Glassfish, but it could be for other reasons.

Personally, I use IDEA for core dev work, codebase comprehension and refactoring, Netbeans for ME,EE,Swing and Eclipse only because I’m often forced to.

The upcoming Netbeans 6, might cause IDEA to drop out of that list.

I would be nice to hear about the results of the survey. Please keep us informed, if the results are made public.

  3. alex Says:

    Quite sure Eclipse will win.

i tried but the survey seems to be prepared by a drunk guy. i could not continue after the third page since it says “Which three features do you value most in an IDE? (Rank 1 to 3)”
    no explanation on rank values.

  5. Egor Malyshev Says:

As far as I could see, you just have to specify a number from 1 to 3 in each of the text boxes next to the feature name. Higher values for more important features, I guess.

  6. Pavel Rodionov Says:

    It means
    1- for first Place
    2- second
    3- third
    Like in sport competition(Gold,Silver,Bronze)

  7. Rob Harwood Says:

Yes, I got confused by the 1,2,3 thing as well. It is indeed “choose three, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd”.
