A Few Little UI Tricks

Here are some new UI-related tricks which you may find useful:

1. Docked Navigation Bar (View | Navigation Bar) now shows Run/Debug controls if the toolbar is switched off.

2. You may also switch off Tool Buttons (View | Tool Buttons) and get them to appear on demand by pressing Alt key twice (or Command key on Mac OS X).

3. If the new dark tooltips on Mac OS are too hard for your eyes, go to “IDE Settings | Appearance | Tooltip mode” and set it to “System”.

These new features are available since recent IntelliJ IDEA 10 EAP, so try them now and tell us what you think!

    Dear JetBrains team,
    great work, I like the ability to hide all the toolbars, but without this shortcut (cmdx2) and run/debug short toolbar it was useless.

    But why cant i get the cmdX2 shortcut work on my mac, with ideaX EAP 98.117

    @naonaoyh It should work if you switch off Tool Buttons.

    I can confirm - it works on 98.117, even it the toolbar is visible.
    Maybe you have any other shortcut or just maybe just press them a little bit faster? ;-)

    I like the second tip - really cool.

    But why does it have to be two presses of the alt key? Why not make them pop up when you press alt once?

    Pressing alt once does nothing at the moment anyway - it makes sense to me to pop up these options when you press alt once. After all if I’m pressing alt it’s probably going to be alt-1 or alt-9 or something anyway.
