JetBrains Development Academy to Serve the Community

Wednesday, April 30th, 2008

You might have already heard about the brand new JetBrains Development Academy. Launched in April 2008, the Academy fosters a community of experts and evangelists to champion best development practices and promote software innovation worldwide.

The JetBrains Development Academy serves as a connection point for developers who strive to adopt top methodologies and use JetBrains products to help them achieve that goal. It plans to provide support for Java and .NET user groups, support educational institutions, conduct in-place presentations, publish articles on the Academy’s website, and help users learn about popular and innovative technologies. These benefits will be provided courtesy of the Academy members, who are recognized experts representing various areas of software development.

The Academy website also features a Q&A section, where you can ask questions, get answers and gain valuable insight into the technologies, products and best practices relevant in today’s world of software development.

We would like to congratulate the winners, express our appreciation to the co-sponsors for the generous prizes, and encourage new participants to take part in the next year’s contest.

Great challenge and great benefits!

Cologne JUG IDE Shootout

Monday, July 9th, 2007

The Greatful Dead said it best: What a long, strange trip it’s been.

Our wonderful trip to Cologne was topped off with a crazy adventure home.

After being stuck in a traffic jam on our way back to Amsterdam’s airport, ditching our GPS’ suggested route, and making our flight with only seconds to spare, we thought we were home free. How wrong we were.

One hour and three drinks later, the flight crew informed us of a potential engine problem. Luckily for us we were still on the ground :-). Another hour passed before we learned the potential problem was a real fuel leak and that the airline was trying to find another plane for us. One more “short” hour passed before we were finally moved to another plane and flew safely home.

After such an adventure I needed a breather, which is why I’m just now writing this report.

OK, back to the topic.

The IDE Shootout was really a fantastic event; unprecedented and unique. We all thank Michael Huettermann for his great idea and even greater hospitality.

I will not go through the entire meeting, as Michael, Roman and Frank already did:

Michael’s post at JUGCologne Blog.
Roman’s report
Frank’s blog post

I just wanted to say that this experience helped us realize what directions other IDEs take, what their positioning points are, and what their weaknesses and benefits are.

Not to sound immodest, but my general impression was that IntelliJ IDEA proved to be the best Java IDE not only to the audience, but to the opponents as well :-).
Even as pacifists, we still shot them all down ;-).

Thank you once again, Michael, for all the hard work you’ve put in to make this all happen!

Herzliche Gruesse aus St.Petersburg! ;-)

As always, may you all develop with pleasure!

- Ann.

The JetBrains-Ajaxian Joint 2006 Survey is now officially closed. We'd like to thank the over 600 developers who participated in the survey. The results will make a difference in the way JetBrains will approach AJAX support.

Thanks again to all who participated in the survey, and stay tuned for cool new AJAX features in IntelliJ IDEA!
