How to get a free license of IntelliJ IDEA
IntelliJ IDEA is a commercial product, but many people don’t know that there are quite easy ways how to get a free license. JetBrains is a big supporter of Java community, JUGs, open source projects and universities, so under certain conditions we provide free licenses to these subjects. Here are the options that you have:
* Java User Group (JUG) leaders are eligible to get a free license from JetBrains for their own usage. You can request the license using the jugs@jetbrains.com e-mail address.
* Speakers at JUGs can also get free license of IntelliJ IDEA from the JUG leader. You can ask your local JUG leader when you speak at a JUG to get the license for you from JetBrains and we’ll be happy to send it.
* JUG leaders can also request 1 license per JUG meeting to give away. So you can organize a contest and the winner will get a license, which I think is a very nice prize.
* If you contribute to an open source project, you can also request a free license from JetBrains using this form.
* We also provide a free classroom license for educational institutions and for trainers. Use this form to apply.
You can also obtain EAP version of IntelliJ IDEA 9 for free from the EAP wiki. Note that this is a work-in-progress build, so sometimes things may break, but you can already preview new features such as Java EE 6 support.
Also note that TeamCity is free for use for up to 20 build configurations, which may satisfy a lot of smaller teams. You don’t get some of the enterprise features like LDAP/AD integration, but other than that you get a fully functional product.
If you are a Ruby developer and you contribute to an open source project you can also request a free license using this form.
Finally, JetBrains’ new product - MetaProgrammingSystem (MPS) is available completely free of charge. If you are interested in programming language evolution and DSLs you really should check out MPS.
As you can see there are many ways how JetBrains supports the worldwide developer community. Yes, you need to be a bit active to get the free license, but you’ll be probably doing a good thing (I consider speaking at JUGs or leading JUGs or educating people as “good” activities - you help other people).
