YouTrack Energy Roadmap

Thursday, September 30th, 2010

==================

Latest Update (as of October 29th, 2010): Early Access Program for the next version has started, and your feedback is absolutely welcomed! We are happy to invite you to download and evaluate Energy EAP builds to get access to the future right now.

==================

Did you know the next YouTrack release only a few months away? The new version is code-named Energy, and we’ve been working on it for some time already. We think we may be on the right track to making the perfect bug tracker! Of course we don’t want to leave you in the dark, so here is the roadmap for YouTrack Energy.
As roadmaps go, plans may change in terms of timing and functionality. However, this is generally the way we see the next YouTrack release.
YouTrack Energy is expected to release some time between the end of 2010 and Q1 2011 and provide the following functionality:

  • Add watchers. Sometimes it’s crucial to notify another user of an issue that was created or updated. Now you’ll be able to add users to the list of watchers at any time. This will help prevent duplicate issues and keep everyone involved aware of any changes made.
    Related issue:

  • Applying commands from VCS commit comments. Currently you can specify an issue ID in a VCS commit comment to associate the commit with a specific issue. With YouTrack Energy, you’ll be able to type a command right in the commit comment, and this command will be applied to the issue. For example, should you commit files with a comment like #JT-1787 fixed tag to be documented, issue JT-1787 will be closed and tagged as “to be documented”.
    Related issue:

  • Applying commands via Jabber. Currently YouTrack can chat with you via Jabber by sending you notifications. With YouTrack Energy, you’ll have your say in the discussion by being able to send it commands via Jabber. No really, ain’t it cool? Say you receive a notification about a new reported issue and you straight away assign it to another person by simply replying to YouTrack jabber bot. Neat!
    Related issue:

  • OpenSearch support. Type your search query right in the address bar in Google Chrome or in the search bar in other browsers and navigate straight to your search results! This feature will be available in all browsers which support the OpenSearch technology: Mozilla Firefox, Internet Explorer, and Google Chrome.
    Related issue:

  • Integration with POP3, IMAP. Submit new issues without even opening the bug tracker! With Energy, you’ll be able to report issues right from your e-mail client.
    Related issue:

You can take a look at the full list of features planned for Energy. We encourage you to vote for features you like, submit new feature requests and get more people to vote for them.
A portion of the feature set announced in this Roadmap will be available for you to evaluate during our upcoming Early Access Program that we’re committed to launching pretty soon, so keep an eye out for more news!

Happy Tester’s Day!

Thursday, September 9th, 2010

On September, 9 1945 the scientists of the Harvard University while testing the computer Mark II Aiken Relay Calculator have found a moth which has got stuck between the contacts of the electromechanical relay. The work they performed required some description, and the word has been found – «debugging» (literally: disposal of an insect) – and nowadays it is used to describe the process of identifying and eliminating bugs which cause a computer to malfunction.
The removed insect was pasted into the computer log with the entry: “First actual case of bug being found”, and was then transferred to the computer museum.

Celebrate this wonderful day by submitting your first BUG into YouTrack if you haven’t done it yet, or download YouTrack and file the first issue to your own bug tracker!

JetBrains TV: Watch with Pleasure!

Thursday, September 2nd, 2010

For some time now, we’ve had requests from the community to have a central point where people could have access to Screencasts and other Video related material that we provide. In response to that, we are happy to announce the availability of JetBrainsTV (Beta!).

The content is organized by Channels, currently one per product, although we will be expanding that to include other topics in the near future. Most of this content, if not all, is tagged with keywords, allowing you to easily locate topics you are interested in. In addition, the cross-cutting nature of the tags allow you to discover new things, for instance functionality that you knew existed in IntelliJ IDEA but weren’t aware that RubyMine also provided.

Content can be voted and commented on, neither of which require you to create an account. Voting is anonymous and comments can be left as a Guest user or using other social media accounts such as Twitter, Disqus or OpenId (obviously based on level of Spam we might have to adjust this in the future).

Contributing content

JetBrains TV is not only a platform to offer centralized screencasts, but also a chance for community members to contribute. By signing in (click on the link in the top right-hand corner), you can upload your own videos, providing you a platform for other community members to see your work. The sign-up process is easy, in fact, you might not even need to create an account. Since it uses the consolidated JetBrains account, if you’ve contributed to the forums or the JetBrains developer community, you’re good to go!

Although it is still in Beta, there’s quite a lot of content on there already and we hope that by opening it up to the community early, we can improve things based on your valuable feedback.

Enjoy!

PS. To support our love for dogfooding we’ve implemented the TV site with PHP and Drupal using PhpStorm IDE. PhpStorm team has received a good bunch of feedback they wanted.
